The Chainsmokers, from Production Duo to Superstars

The Chainsmokers have always been a changing group. Now The Chainsmokers are made up of Alex Pall and Andrew Taggart, but Taggart wasn’t always a part of the group. Alex Pall was introduced to Andrew Taggart by his manager and instantly recognized the greatness the two could share.

Alex Pall, 32, is a New York native. He grew up with parents who were art dealers. DJing had always been a hobby for Alex Pall, he grew up doing DJing. He was DJing in NYC when his manager mentioned a producer from Maine who he may be interested in working with.

Andrew Taggart, 28, was raised in Freeport, Maine. He became fascinated by EDM dance music at the age of 15 while visiting Argentina. His first exposure to EDM was David Guetta, Daft Punk, and Trentemoller. When Andrew Taggart noticed that tons of college students were getting booked as DJs in New York City, he knew what he had to do. He went down to New York and Met Alex Pall.

“We both initially knew what we brought to the table,” said Alex Pall. The music duo often worked from 9 in the morning until 7 in the evening when they first began. They also had lengthy discussions about their motives, ambition, music tastes, and their own sound. Their drive is what made it possible for them to become as big as they are today.

Now they have worked with some of the biggest up-and-coming names in pop music. Recently they worked with singer Halsey on “Closer,” which Andrew Taggart also provided vocals for.

“She’s incredible,” Alex Pall said. “Halsey was number one [on our list of artists we wanted to work with.]”

What is more unique about the song “Closer” is that it marked the first time either of The Chainsmokers had sang their own vocals. The Chainsmokers have always been the writers of the vocals, but normally a guest singer is featured on their tracks.

Andrew Taggart’s involvement in singing will surely change The Chainsmokers moving forward.
